Training
Training Keeps Us, And Dealers, Headed In The Right Direction
Keeping up to date with the latest product offerings, program additions, and service techniques is a never-ending task. Because having this knowledge is imperative to our dealers' ability to maintain a high level of expertise with the consumer, American Tire Distributors has invested heavily in training. At our field training center in Huntersville, NC, we transfer the latest product knowledge to our sales staff, so they in turn can support our dealers with accurate and up-to-date information. We offer dealers training classes in retail sales, business management, and service techniques at little or no cost by collaborating with our manufacturer-suppliers, and we regularly host product update seminars for our dealers nationwide.

Richard Johnson Chairman and Chief Executive Officer |
Dick Johnson is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Tire Distributors, Inc. His business success stems from his ability to balance passionate common sense with expertise in the distribution business. Johnson, who became American Tire Distributors' Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in May 2003, is passionate about many things, including his belief that tire distributors who operate retail chains only deter the success of their own customers and ultimately the tire industry itself. Consequently, he has focused the Company on providing value-added distribution to independent tire dealers.
Johnson has led the Company through a period of divesting retail stores and improving its financial flexibility and strength. Since becoming Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, he has aligned a management team that brings a broad range of expertise to the Company's business of serving tire and wheel retail dealers. Supported by his multi-disciplined management team, Johnson also has begun to shape a common culture at American Tire Distributors, which had grown steadily during the 1990s through a series of acquisitions. Johnson has built a unified team committed to using its essential strengths - distribution and customer service - to help independent tire dealers grow their businesses.
Prior to becoming Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Tire Distributors, Johnson served as the Company's President and CEO since 2001. Before that time Johnson led Heafner Tire Group's Southeast Division as President. He also served as President and Chief Operating Officer of ITCO Tire Company from February 1997 until ITCO merged with Heafner in May 1998.
His management experience includes 30 years in another highly competitive industry: food distribution. From 1971 until 1996, Johnson served as Senior Vice President, then President and Chief Operating Officer, of Albert Fisher Foods, Inc. He also held management positions with Leprino Foods, Sargento Cheese and Kraft Foods.
Johnson holds an AA degree from Palm Beach College. Johnson and his family reside in the Lake Norman area just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina.

1985 - J.H. Heafner |
In 1985, the National Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association established a Tire Industry Hall of Fame. That year the industry honored James Harlan Heafner by inducting him into the Hall of Fame along with Harvey S. Firestone (founder of Firestone Tire and Rubber), and Frank A. Seiberling (founder of The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company).
Mr. Heafner was cited for his pioneering efforts in tire distribution, private branding, and his industry and community support. In 1935 he gave up a career in education to begin a small tire business that developed into one of the most respected and successful independently owned companies within the industry. His legacy endures today through American Tire Distributors.
Mr. Heafner was one of the first to recognize the need for an "non-national" tire brand that would offer the consumer an alternative to the higher priced national brands, would be exclusive to his Company, and would be available to him as he expanded into new markerts.
In the late 1960's Mr. Heafner founded and presided over Global Tire and Rubber Company. From this experience he launched the Company's own private brand, Regul tires, in the mid-1970's. Operating control of Heafner Tire Company, Inc. transitioned to his daughter, Ann Gaither in 1985. Mr. Heafner died in May of 1988.
